ROSE HAVEN PARK

While all Rose Haven homeowners have an easement allowing them pedestrian access to the water in front of the motel, there is a county park within walking distance as well. It is located at the corner of Albany and Walnut Avenues and is maintained by the community. The park was purchased by Anne Arundel County as part of its Open Space Program. Today Rose Haven Park has a picnic table, natural sea grasses, a place to launch a wind surfer or a rowboat (no motors and no jet skis), places to fish, a place to walk your dog (and please carry a bag to clean up after your dog) and maybe most important, an area where one can look at the Chesapeake Bay. It is the result of many hours of work and has been developed with assistance from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation Department and guidance from Anne Arundel Community College's Environmental Center. In addition, students from Southern High School have worked the past two years in the park as part of their community service requirement. Your assistance in mowing the grass is both needed and greatly appreciated.

Burning Phragmites

Phragmite (frag-mighty) is called the common reed. It’s a good name because this tall grass is all too common around the Chesapeake Bay. The soil is ideal for phragmite and, as a result, the plant tends to take over an area and crowd out other wetlands plants. Phragmite roots, called rhizomes, spread underground. This means pulling one stalk out doesn’t stop its growth whatsoever. The phragmite that took over Rose Haven Park was burned out by Anne Arundel County. Today, the rhizomes are still evident but the 15 foot high stalk are nonexistent.
