ROSE HAVEN CIVIC ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER FOR NOVEMBER, 2001
The November meeting of the Rose Haven Civic Association will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at 8:00 p.m. at Herrington Harbour. Hot cider and ginger snaps will be served. Hope to see you there.
PUMPKIN PATCH OCTOBER 20
The bus left the deli at 10:30 a.m. and went to Cherry Hill Farm on Gallahan Road in Piscataway, MD. Everyone had a good time and left with a big pumpkin and an apple. There were many activities including a hay ride, a barn with horses, chickens, goats, turkeys and other barnyard animals. There was a large slide, face painting, balloon animals made by a clown and "hollerin" pipes. Also, "The Wizard of Oz" was the theme in the woods where we walked. We will try this again next year. If we do not have a good turnout we will cancel this and try something new. We had 13 people go on this trip.
HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARADE OCTOBER 27
Cathy Clements, Author
We hope you weren't scared half out of your wits,
By all of the characters walking in your midst.
There were clowns, queens, a dinosaur, soldier, cheerleader and kings,
A princess in a coach, Harry Potter and some things with wings.
Officer Garfola drove his car and the siren made a "whoop whoop" noise,
And some people came outdoors to see the girls and boys.
As we sparkled and chatted and shined and strolled,
We realized we were starting to get really, really cold.
We headed for the deli for some cookies, juice and cider,
Ms. Lee let us eat there, and nothing could have been kinder.
It was warm and bright with plenty of tables and seats,
A perfect place to relax and enjoy all the treats.
After introduction, thank-you's and clean-up the evening was at an end,
We hope everyone enjoyed it and plans next year to attend.
Thanks to "jeep" Garfola for donating his time and police car to lead the parade, Ms. Lee, the new owner of the Bayside Deli, for donating her time, tables and chairs and candy. The Rose Haven Civic Association provided glow-in-the-dark necklaces to each parent and child, cookies, juice and cider. Thank you for your memberships and patronage which made this activity possible to all residents of the community.
PROGRESSIVE DINNER SATURDAY, NOV. 3, 6:00 P.M.
Cathy Clements, Author
The dinner began with appetizers at the home of Paul and June Richmond. All the guests stepped back to the 1950's in their "party" room. The music and decor made everyone feel young again and enhanced the flavors of the crab dips, cheese and fruits, wine and beer that were served.
We then progressed to Captain Roy and Carolyn Leverone's gracious home. Clam chowder or onion soup and salad were served while everyone enjoyed their beautiful collection of lighthouses and candlelight.
On we went to Warren and Doris McMichael's home. Their newly laid hardwood floors were beautiful. We all were careful not to spill gravy, roast beef, mashed potatoes, broccoli or beets on them.
Finally, after wisely reserving space in our tummies, we went to Steven and Linda Williams home for dessert. Apple and pumpkin pie, a flower decorated yellow cake and coconut rum cake were served with coffee or tea. The night chill prevented eating at their really cool "around the tree" Tiki bar but some of us visited it anyway.
The whole evening was filled with lively conversation, friendly talk and reminiscing. Newer residents enjoyed hearing how Rose Haven had changed or stayed the same. Older residents enjoyed hearing how happy newcomers are to live here.
Thanks to everyone who donated time, home, food and attendance. It made for a pleasant and tasty evening.
The answers to the Regional Food Day are 1-Alaska, 2-Mt. States, 3-Pacific N.W., 4-New England, 5- Hawaiian Is, 6- S.W., 7-Plain Sts., 8-Mid.Atl.Sts., 9-Calif. 10-Mid-W, 11-South, 12-Louisiana.
STREET TALK
Wouldn't seasonal flowers enhance the two Rose Haven signs? We have a new RHCA member who has volunteered to plant and care of seasonal flowers. He works for the National Arboretum and has many good ideas. Thanks so much to Ed McCarthy. It will be announced when this enhancement to our signs will take place.
PARTICIPATION WINNER
Doris McMichael won the participation for the month of October in the amount of $32.00. Her number was pulled by our new member Ed McCarthy. Congratulations!! You must be a member and be present at the meeting to win. The remaining balance in the Participation Fund is now $0.

BILL 65-01 MERGER OF LOTS
Tom Gill, Author
Bill 65-01, Merger of Lots, was voted down by the County Council of Anne Arundel County, Councilman John Klocko abstaining. The Bill was introduced by Mrs. Samorajczyk, Mr. Klosterman and Mrs. Murphy. There were a number of meetings and hearings on this Bill, the last one on October 9 in the County Council Chamber. The Bill became very complex with a number of amendments and changes. I noticed a lot of well-dressed people in attendance at the meeting on October 9. I assumed they were lawyers or developers, and a County official later confirmed it.
Mrs. Samorajczyk (pronounced Sam-or-isaac) will introduce a new bill, Bill 86-01, and there will be a hearing on it on November 19 in the County Council Chamber.
Anne Arundel County agreed to pay Calvert County for 550 sewer taps for Holland Point and Rose Haven. Each community has used approximately 200 each for our new sewer system. In addition, there are a lot of wetlands that cannot be developed.
Holland Point owns the roads in their community, which gives them a trump card. The intent of Bill 86-01 is to have parcels of land, platted prior to 1952, to get their lot lines merged. The current lot sizes are not considered buildable by today's standards. Reconfiguring the property, working around the platted roads, will be an obstacle.
BILL 86-01 HIGHWAY TALK
Tom Gill called Mr. Klocko's office to find out if we should be at the meeting on November 19. They told him we should show up with a good crowd of people from Rose Haven and Holland Point to fight this Bill. I called Ed Pachico and told him about the Bill 86-01 and he said he will try to get some of his people to go and we will do the same. The bus holds 55 passengers so let's all get together, Rose Haven and Holland Point, to show our concern for this Bill 86-01. The bus will leave the Bayside Deli on November 19 at 5:30 p.m. This Bill is bigger than street talk. I call this a highway bill which is bigger than street talk.
Rose Haven, let's get out and show our concern. Call Warren McMichael at 301-812-1296 if you are going by bus.
STREET TALK
We had a meeting October 13 at 7:00 p.m. with Mr. Chaney. People at the meeting were Warren McMichael, Vivienne Trawick, Jim and Kitty Veach.
We talked about the beach. He said he had a lot of problems with kids and adults on his Herrington Harbour boat accesses and he said let's look at the Park. I said, why don't you try and make the next RHCA meeting on November 14. Mr. Chaney said he will try and make the meeting so he can explain what his ideas are to the people of Rose Haven Civic Association as well as everyone in Rose Haven.
