BENTLEY TYLER wouldn't like the idea someone took the time to write about him. In fact he wouldn't like the idea you are taking the time to read about him. It's because he was a Rose Haven resident who always took the time to lend a hand to another while rarely asking for a hand for himself.

He was a television repairman by trade, living with his wife Theresa outside Washington D.C. and raising a family. He told a story once of traveling to Florida with a friend to pick up a bunch of old televisions with the plan to bring them back here and use some for parts while fixing others and reselling them at a profit. On the way back, they ended up at one of the famous Florida racetracks and proceeded to lose money that would have gone for food and gas. Bentley called his wife asking her to wire some dollars to him and she refused, telling him, you got in this mess, you get out of this mess. He and his friend started fixing and selling televisions in the back of their truck and selling them. By the time they got back to Maryland, the story goes, they had only a few dollars remaining. That was the last time Bentley went to Florida.

He retired in Rose Haven and became active at his brother's tackle shop down the road in Chesapeake Beach. He was also a common site for those traveling along Walnut Avenue sitting astride his riding lawn mower cutting grass as a volunteer in the county park every summer. Sometimes Bentley Tyler went out and cut it by himself. Sometimes, he had help. Never did he ask for gas money. All the time he was doing it because he cared about the land that had been saved from development and he cared about maintaining a place for families to gather along the Chesapeake Bay.

During the summer of 2001, Bentley Tyler underwent a series of chemotherapy treatments as a result of his private and quiet battle with cancer. One afternoon a few residents began cutting the grass in the park, picking up trash on the beach and trimming back weeds from the trees. Just a few minutes after their work began, a familiar sound could be heard coming up Albany Avenue toward the waterfront park. It was Bentley Tyler. His lawnmower's engine was missing and backfiring every so often and he now wore a baseball cap to keep the sun off his now hairless head. But despite the cancer that was ravaging his body, Bentley's spirit was as strong as when he had first rode that mower to the park. He took the time that afternoon as he always had---to lend a hand to others. It was the last time he would cut the grass in the park.

The lawnmower is quiet now. But everyone in Rose Haven can still hear the engine at work and feel Bentley Tyler's spirit urging each of us to make the world a little bit better than the way we found it. That's a lesson each of us will do well to learn and then hand off to the next generation. Just as Bentley has done.

ROSE HAVEN'S LOSS OF A FAVORITE SON

Rose Haven recently lost one of its better-known citizens -- Pat Piper. No, he didn't die. He moved! That rat bastard! I suppose that one of Patrick's main claims to fame is that he was a producer for the old Larry King radio show several years back, or that he was Larry's ghostwriter for several books. But I don't see it that way. In my opinion, Patrick is just a good ol' boy. A person always willing to lend a helping hand, no matter what the request may be. I guess you could just say that "he's gone on to join the White Man!"

Rose Haven Park is really going to miss Patrick, too, as he was one of the main forces behind obtaining and maintaining the park.

2001 Lower Western Shore Wade-In

Sunday, June 10th at 1:00 p.m.

Owings Cliffs, Fairhaven

Although there was some miscommunication about the timing for this year's wade-in, it was a big success! Delegate George Owings arrived at noon with a contingent of waders and the rest of us came at 1:00. So we actually had TWO wade-ins on Sunday. It really was a day full of family-oriented, educational activities at the Fourth Annual Lower Western Shore Wade-In!! The "Wade-In," begun by former State Senator Bernie Fowler, is a unique way to get communities excited about water quality and to provide local residents with a non-technical method of measuring the health of their waters. Please join us next year and Wade-In For The Bay!

The Lower Western Shore "Wade-Ins" engage families from all over the watershed to "lend a foot" in promoting water quality awareness. The day's events center around the actual wading into Herring Bay where Delegate George Owings leads the participants to mark the depth at which they can no longer see their feet. Last year's event recorded a depth of 26" and this year's Wade-In was at a depth of 29"! For additional information, please contact Sean McGuire at 410.260.8727 or e-mail to smcguire@dnr.state.md.us.

Directions: Take Route 2 to Route 423 East (Fairhaven Road). Make a right at the fork towards Fairhaven Road. Follow the signs to Owings Cliffs.

Proposed North Beach
to Rose Haven Trail

June 21, 2000

NORTH BEACH-TO-ROSE HAVEN NATURE TRAIL IS PROPOSED

This past week at the North Beach Town Hall, a Maryland DNR employee, Mark Spencer, at the invitation of North Beach Mayor Mark Frazer, presented a proposed route for a nature trail which would run from North Beach in Calvert County to Rose Haven in Anne Arundel County. According to Mark Frazer, it appears that both counties and the State of Maryland are supportive of the idea of a nature trail (thus the participation of DNR as consultant in its development).

Among those attending the small briefing were citizens from Rose Haven, Holland Point and Burnt Oaks as well as Steuart Chaney, Delegate George Owings and State Senator Mike Miller. (Bruce Wahl from Chesapeake Beach was also in attendance to present, if requested, a similar plan currently under development for a multi-use trail and other recreational and educational facilities along the abandoned right-of-way of the Chesapeake Beach Railway and Fishing Creek.)

Apparently, the development of the North Beach-Rose Haven nature trail has been a collaborative effort over the last year between DNR, MDE, Steuart Chaney and Mayor Frazer, among others, and is being considered as an integral part of a planned nature museum/center to be built on the current site of the North Beach municipal parking lot. The primary route is proposed to be for the most part on Mr. Chaney's land, running from the Herrington Harbor Marina, behind Rose Haven and continuing south along the edge of the marshland all the way to the museum site in North Beach. The current route has been chosen with a view to involving the fewest private landowners (and therefore the fewest easements) and the least intrusion into the wetlands. At this stage of the development process, the primary organizers thought it was time to widen their collaboration to include the local communities, i.e., to see if there was community interest and support. After hearing from those assembled at the meeting that there was interest, it was suggested that meeting participants go back to their communities and tell them about the planned nature trail: find out from them what features they would like incorporated in such a trail or, alternatively, to find out why they would be opposed to such a trail.

The currently proposed route is just a starting point. For instance, there is no access to the trail from Holland Point. If the community desires access, this needs to be addressed. Mike Miller and George Owings are in favor of extending the boardwalk path into the wetlands at various points in order to better observe the environment and educate visitors. Also discussed at the meeting was the composition of the trail itself. DNR was suggesting an asphalt path which all present opposed. Bruce Wahl indicated that his committee which is developing the Fishing Creek trail had decided on a 10' wide boardwalk with 4' railings on either side which would allow multiple use of the path by bicycles, pedestrians and even wheelchairs. With regard to safety, it was suggested that access to the path would not be allowed after dark. Other possible issues to be addressed and for which input is sought from the communities and other interested parties include: security, maintenance and funding sources for the construction of the pathway and for remuneration to Mr. Chaney for the use or sale of his land.

Mayor Frazer also advised meeting participants of a soon to be launched plan by the Corps of Engineers, working with DNR, to revitalize the marsh and ensure the proper tidal flow from the marsh to the Chesapeake Bay at the point of the Calvert County/Anne Arundel county lines. According to the mayor, this plan falls in line with one of the goals of the nature museum/center which is to provide programs whereby the community can be involved in the preservation of the surrounding environment in addition to educational opportunities. As the Corps gradually restores waterways, students seeking community credits could come to the museum and sign up for remedial projects such as planting marsh grasses, building bird houses and monitoring the return of marsh life.

The Concerned Citizens Committee of Rose Haven had two fundraisers last Summer to benefit Rose Haven Park. The first fundraiser was held on Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Herrington Harbour South on the beach to celebrate the fireworks. The fireworks were great and we had a very successful afternoon. See you next year!

The second fundraiser was August 19 & 20, 2000, at the Bayfest in North Beach, Maryland. We sold beer on Saturday, August 19 from 11:00 a.m. — to 8:00 p.m. We sold sodas on Sunday, August 20 from 11:30 a.m. — 6:00 p.m. It was a good weekend! THANKS FOR STOPPING BY AND SAYING HELLO!

All proceeds from both fundraisers went toward the costs of maintaining the Park.

The 2000 Park Cleanup

Although we didn't have a large turnout of volunteers for our cleanup — it was very cold (for May) and cloudy — we had a good cleanup of the Park. This cleanup was a part of the Herring Bay Survey Clean Watershed Initiative. The Survey is part of the Governor's Lower Western Shore Tributary Team.

Save Our Streams has guided the Herring Bay Survey team through this phase of the project and will continue until its completion. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) oversees the Tributary teams and helps with these projects.

The volunteers were:

Terry Lehr, of Save Our Streams, brought gloves, trash bags and wild flowers seeds for planting in the park. Anyone planning on working in the park that needs a pair of work gloves, call Vivienne Trawick, (301) 855-0914, e-mail: vivienne@rosehavenmaryland.com.

Last Year's Third Annual "Walk In The Bay"

Well, it was hot! The turnout was not very good. The pictures we took turned out to be black and white. But everyone seemed to have a good time.

Following is a letter to the editor of the Bay Weekly, Volume III, Number 26, June 29 - July 5, 2000 written by Barbi Shields (e-mail bshields@olg.com, a member of the Owings Cliffs' Citizens Association:

Dear Bay Weekly:

As a resident of Fair Haven and member of the Owings Cliffs' Citizens Association, I would like to thank Sen. Mike Miller and Del. Virginia Clagett for taking time out of their busy schedule and time away from their families on such a sweltering hot day to attend the Third Wade-In in Herring Bay June 11. Senator Miller led this year's wade-in, filling in for Del. George Owings — who attended even though he was suffering from a bout of the flu bug. Senator Miller led us to a depth of 30 inches, which surpassed last year's reading by a few inches.

The Wade-In, an event that promotes environmental issues of our local tributary and waterways, was started years ago by Bernie Fowler, who continues the tradition in the Patuxent River. Wade-Ins are now promoted by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Tributary Team.

These events are not attended by a great number of people and, unfortunately, less each year. I believe that by attending and listening to environmental concerns of their constituents, our elected officials show their dedication to and support for the environment and especially our Chesapeake and Herring Bays.

P.S. Anyone wanting to purchase a hand-painted "Wade-In 2000" T-shirt for $20 (of which a portion goes to environmental issues) can reach me at bshields@olg.com.
